Crossflow Technologies

Micro-filtration (Range 0.1 – 10 Micron)

  • Microfiltration systems are typically designed for low pressure operation, which makes MF technology an environmentally friendly option for process separations.
  • Energia Filtration designs and fabricates a wide range of microfiltration systems, but we also help customers to develop processes through our unique application
    development program.
  • We start by collaborating with our customers to first understand their process goals, and then Energia’s development team prepares a comprehensive test plan, including feasibility and pilot scale testing. Energia offers an array of microfiltration pilot systems with a full range of capabilities. Some of pilot systems can be considered mini-production scale demonstration units.
  • With the ability to design and fabricate control systems in-house, and durable SS304 or SS316 stainless steel construction, pilot tests can be fine-tuned to the specific requirements of our customers. Pilot studies are conducted either at Energia’s Head Branch in Pune, or on location at a customer’s chosen test facility.
  • Once the test results are collected, the engineering team engages to design the full scale membrane process solution. As a microfiltration systems manufacturer, Energia has the capability to fabricate, install, commission and support full-scale and multi-
process (RO, NF, UF, & MF) membrane systems.
  • In every step of the process, we aim to deliver timely, knowledge, friendly service, and ultimately, application profitability for our customers.

Ultra-filtration (Range 0.01 – 0.1 Micron)

  • Energia Filtration offers the widest range of ultrafiltration membranes available to provide maximum flexibility in solving unique process challenges. Available in both spiral wound and flat sheet membrane configurations, Energia can customize ultrafiltration membranes and membrane systems to meet the specific application goals of our customers.
  • Ultrafiltration membranes are capable of separating larger materials such as colloids,
particulates, fats, bacteria, and proteins, while allowing sugars, and other low molecular weight molecules to pass through the membrane.
  • With a pore size range between 0.01 to 0.1µm, ultrafiltration membrane pore sizes fall
between that of Nano-filtration and microfiltration.
  • UF membranes typically operate between 50 – 120 PSI (3.4 – 8.3 bar) and are dependent on transmembrane pressure to drive the separation process. Other polymeric ultrafiltration membrane characteristics include robust chemical and temperature resistance, and low fouling tendencies if proper pretreatment is employed.

UF Applications

Energia Filtration currently offers over a dozen different types of ultrafiltration membranes, all of which exhibit excellent pH and temperature resistance, in addition to low fouling tendencies. Some common applications of Energia’s UF membrane technology include:

Cross Flow
Filtration & Process Techniques

  • Cross Flow Ultrafiltration (also known as Tangential Flow Ultrafiltration) is a separation process where the feed stream is in parallel to the membrane surface, which helps to control the formation of the gel layer, greatly improving flux stability and membrane life vs. perpendicular flow systems.
  • As opposed to conventional filtration which causes a quick build-up of solids onto the membrane surface, cross flow filtration increases the passage of permeate through the membrane and overall flux efficiency.
  • Both sanitary and industrial ultrafiltration membranes are comprised of a semi-permeable, polymeric membrane layer cast onto a uniform substrate, or backing material. Energia Filtration employs phase inversion to extra solvents out of the liquid polymer dope that has been cast onto the backing material. As the solvents are extracted, the polymer solidifies forming an asymmetric pore structure, which is ideal for controlling rejection at the surface, while promoting maximum throughput of permeate.

  • Many of these membrane formulations were developed specifically by a customer request. Because Energia is financially independent and family owned, we are able to reinvest heavily in our research and application development programs. As a result, membranes and spiral elements can be customized with great speed and flexibility, in order to better serve our valued customers.

NF Applications

Nano-filtration membranes are a relatively recent development, and offer greater selectivity of ions vs. reverse osmosis membranes that reject all ion species in a feed stream. This unique characteristic provides flexibility in separation process development that can greatly impact performance and profitability, especially for industrial applications. Here are some common applications of Energia’s NF membrane technology:

Nano-filtration (Range 0.001 – 0.01 Micron)

  • Energia Filtration offers a suite of Nano-filtration (NF) membranes that are engineered to provide optimal flux and rejection and can be customized to meet the unique requirements of specific process applications. Available in both spiral-wound and flat sheet membrane configurations, Energia’s Nano-filtration membranes are
capable of rejecting multivalent salts and larger molecules, while selectively rejecting varying amounts of monovalent salts.
  • Nano-filtration is a separation process characterized by organic, thin-film composite membranes with a pore size range of 0.1 to 10nm. Unlike reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, which reject all solutes, NF membranes can operate at lower pressures and offer selective solute rejection based on both size and charge.
  • Energia Filtration’s wide range of Nano-filtration membranes offer varying degrees of ion selectivity to aid in the development of customized process solutions. Energia’s sanitary NF membranes are compliant with FDA standards listed in CFR Title 21, 3-A Sanitary Standards No. 45-02, as well as USDA sanitary standards and are fit for use in a variety of sanitary, as well as industrial applications across a broad spectrum of
industries. If required, Energia can even develop new custom Nano-filtration membranes to meet specific process goals, in partnership with our customers.
  • With a pore size between 0.1-10nm, Energia Filtration’s Nano-filtration membranes allow water and some salts to pass through the membrane while retaining multivalentions, low molecular weight molecules, sugars, proteins, and other organic compounds. After years of research and development, Energia’s NFS, NFX, NFW, and NFG Nano-filtration membrane products have been proven to offer great resistance to fouling, a high degree of selectivity, and the physical durability needed for application in a wide range of industrial separation processes. NFS, NFX, and NFW have excellent MgSO4 and lactose rejection, while NFG partially removes monosaccharides from oligosaccharides. Nano-filtration membranes overall are also able to greatly reduce levels of hardness, nitrates, sulfates, tannins, turbidity, color, TDS, and moderate levels of salt from feed water streams
